Supercar sweep

Lamborghini's limited edition Reventón has caused a goldrush amongst its competitors. With the upper limits of performance and price seemingly evaporating into thin air, the race is on to produce the most outlandish supercars, stamped with an aura of exclusivity thanks to brand tie-ins and ultra-low production runs.

The established high performance players are also being challenged from the luxury end of the market, as companies like Jaguar and Bentley hone their cars to deliver hitherto unprecedented levels of power. However, Lamborghini and Ferrari are refusing to be outdone, with a major overhaul for the Gallardo and an all-new model, the California, respectively.

Jaguar XKR-S
Jaguar’s XKR-S is a supercar in a sharp suit, a full-blown high performance variant of the elegant coupé that’s been one of the better-looking cars on the road ever since its debut in 2006.

Thanks to an uncompromising commitment to getting the shape just right, Jaguar’s design team have managed to evoke blissful memories of an undeniably glorious past without descending into the retro quagmire that occasionally sullies through the industry.

The XKR-S simply dials up the sportiness. Swathed in black, inside and out, set low and bedecked with aerodynamic accoutrements that help the V8-powered coupé on to a limited speed of 174mph. With production capped at just 200 units, we recommend you move fast as well.

Ferrari California
Ferrari has made its first foray into the world of folding hardtops, following the curious flip-top roof of the 2006 Superamerica. The new California continues the company’s Americanophilia, but this certainly doesn’t signal a lazier style of motoring, through ocean drives and palm-lined highways.

Well aware that their brand equity depends on delivering cars that can crush the competition on the track as well on the automotive catwalk, the California is billed as one of the world’s fastest convertibles. Resplendent in Azzurro California blue - a welcome change to scarlet - the car slots into the company’s range as a front-engined alternative to the far gnarlier 599.

The seating layout is also unconventional: it’s dubbed a 2+ by the manufacturer. Although this is a tacit acknowledgement that it isn’t quite up to transporting more than full grown adults, the California still offers a more practical proposition than certain other rivals. With a Jean Nouvel-designed production line in the offing, Ferrari are upping the design ante.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Fbg by Hermès
Ever since the barn-storming Bugatti Veyron broke cover in 2005, the Franco-German company has consolidated its status as purveyors of the world’s most exclusive (and expensive) automobile with a steady drip feed of limited editions.

Kicking off with the Pur Sang, a stripped back (if such a term applies) edition of five with bare carbon fibre bodywork, the company has now launched a collaboration with French fashion house Hermès.

The Bugatti Veyron Fbg is, as you’d expect, swathed in fine cloth and quality materials, exhibiting even finer craftsmanship than the ‘standard’ hand-built car. This is an ultra bespoke glove for an automotive velvet fist - still the world’s fastest production car, with no real rivals in sight. The two tone (ebony and étoupe) machine also has fitted luggage, discrete Hermès branding and calfskin hide throughout.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4
It’s a shame Lamborghini have given their uprated Gallardo such an unwieldy name, for it disguises the fact that this Mk II version of the ‘baby Lamborghini’ is a vastly superior machine to the original iteration.

The name refers to an all-new V10 engine that manages that essential modern trick of boosting power while reducing emissions and fuel consumption. The original car’s admirably angular form has also been given a little bit of sharpening up, a bit of lightweight cosmetic surgery to bring it in line with the company’s current Stealth-inspired design direction.

Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed
A supercar cut from a different cloth, Bentley's new 600bhp Continental Flying Spur Speed is proudly billed as the most powerful four-door ever to come from a British manufacturer. We also suspect Crewe's finest are making a last ditch stand in the horsepower wars before hunkering down and delivering on their bold promise to slash C02 emissions and raise fuel economy right across the range.

However, when viewed as a final fling with sheer automotive indulgence, the Flying Spur Speed does make some sort of sense. After all, this is no wide-hipped, Italian-styled, mid-engined supercar but a four-door saloon that combines an upright stance, capacious cabin and enough boot space to accommodate a successful hit and run on the Salone Mobile with genuine 200mph ability.
